El Transcantabrico, Spain’s 5-star Cruise on Rail

Billed as a five-star “cruise on rails”, El Transcantabrico is Spain’s most luxurious way to see and experience the lush, green Northern part of the country.

Unveiled only May of this year, Gran Lujo, El Transcantabrico’s new service for the elite and can afford features all Preferente Suites, which are each half a train car. These cabins are about 129 square feet; making a huge difference to some travelers who require more space and private lounge area. The Preferente Suites have a double bed, long sofa, flat-screen DVD, computer for your private use (wifi when in stations) and lots of storage in closets, under the bed, and under the sofa. The Grand Lujo train will only take 28 passengers, and thereby be able to offer a much more intimate (and pricey) travel experience for discriminating travelers. However, these cabins can also accommodate three persons. With this luxury train you can travel from Santiago de Compostela to Leon, or from Leon to Santiago; from the lands of Castile and Leon, to the shores of the Bay of Biscay.

For a seven night accommodation, a standard double suite can cost up to £2,400/£2,086 per person.  Don´t fret though, all the comfort and luxury awaits on board starting from your breakfast which can rival even the bests in the country. There is also an excursion by luxury coach to parts that the train can´t reach so you will have the time to wander and awe yourselves with the lush surroundings, the idyllic life, and the breathtaking castles in the Northern part of Spain.Best time to go is March to September though the weather would not be as kinder so don´t forget to pack your raincoat and umbrella.  We also recommend reading the novel “El Transiberico / The Transiberican” by Juan Pedro Aparicio while onboard to combat the tunnels of boredom.
